Individual Psychotherapy
One way Dr. Giurleo supports children and families is through the practice of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is an evidence-based treatment modality for anxiety, depression, and behavioral challenges. By addressing how one’s thoughts (cognitive), impact their behavior, significant changes can occur resulting in less anxiety, improved mood and productive behavior. CBT is effective with children, adolescents and adults. Younger children require parental support to benefit from CBT at home, outside of office visits. CBT is a goal-based, directive therapeutic approach that offers specific skills, strategies and interventions to use at home, school and in the community. Often families are assigned therapeutic “homework” to practice between sessions. Dr. Giurleo encourages children and families to learn coping tools for their “toolbox,” to use whenever they feel stressed, angry or overwhelmed.
Another approach Dr. Giurleo uses to support children and families is Behavioral Therapy. Behavioral therapy is an evidence-based treatment modality for symptoms of ADHD and other behavioral challenges. Behavioral therapy is a goal-based intervention, addressing specific behavioral challenges in an organized, methodical manner. Specific behavioral interventions include individualized programs of rewards or consequences for certain behaviors to teach children appropriate behavior and skills. Behavioral therapy does not focus on why people behave a certain way. Rather it focuses on direct interventions to change behavior in the short and long term. Behavior therapy is effective for children, adolescents and adults. Children and teens will require adult support to benefit from behavioral interventions at home and school, outside of office visits. Often families are assigned therapeutic “homework” to practice between sessions, and often communication between Dr. Giurleo and your child’s school will be beneficial to treatment.

Parent Coaching
“Since starting coaching with Dr. Giurleo, I feel so much better and in control. [My child] is happier. He doesn’t tantrum and loves his new routines!”
Mom of 6 year old with PDD-NOS
Do you know that recent research tells us that Parent Coaching is one of the most effective ways to support children with ADHD, Asperger’s/High Functioning Autism, and Learning Disabilities? Parent coaching is more effective than individual psychotherapy and social skills groups in helping children improve attention, academic achievement and social skills.
How Coaching Works
Coaching is different from psychotherapy in two important ways:
- Coaching assumes that the people participating are inherently healthy and able to collaborate with a coach to develop more effective parenting skills. The focus is on the “here-and-now,” not past issues or the source of current difficulties.
- Coaching is very focused and provides a forum for parents to identify one or two specific goals and develop Action Plans and Action Steps to make immediate progress toward improving family functioning.
Dr. Giurleo provides coaching via phone and email. She has a variety of programs that provide parenting information, skills and strategies combined with group and individual coaching.
Individual coaching sessions are scheduled for 30 minutes at a time and focus on goals such as developing morning, evening, homework routines, how to manage tantrums/acting out behavior, strategies to improve communication with your child, how to partner with members of your child’s treatment team (school staff, doctors, therapists).
Coaching programs can be customized to your specific needs.
